Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs)
ISAs were launched by the Government in April 1999 to encourage people to save and invest in an easy and tax-efficient way. ISAs are designed to help the value of your money grow over time and/or provide an income.
You can invest up to £10,200 in the tax year starting 6 April 2010, which will increase to £10,680 in the 2011/12 tax year starting 6 April 2011.
You can invest up to half the limit in a Cash ISA, which we do not offer; and the rest in a Stocks and Shares ISA each tax year. You have to be 18 (16 for Cash ISAs) and a UK resident to be eligible for an ISA.
You may also transfer from your existing Cash ISAs to Stocks and Shares ISAs.
Investments with tax advantages – Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs) and Enterprise Investment Schemes (EISs)
Launched in the mid-90’s, VCTs and EISs are government initiatives designed to generate funding for small to medium sized companies (SMEs) who would otherwise find it difficult to secure investment for their organisations. They work by offering tax reliefs to the investor in return for their speculative investment in companies that might normally be considered as higher risk.
VCT’s are run a little like collective investments - by a fund manager - who will spread the collective investments of a number of individuals across a group of SMEs. Alternatively, investment in an EIS would constitute a direct investment into a single company as opposed to a group.
Companies must comply with rigorous criteria to qualify for funding in this way and both schemes significantly benefit the economy as a whole – an injection of capital into new, innovative organizations fosters the entrepreneurial British spirit that drives growth in our nation.
There are many other investment vehicles and we are experienced in advising on all of them. Please contact us if you are interested in:
