Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs)
ISAs have been around since 1999 and are a government scheme designed to encourage you to save by offering a tax shelter for your money. There are two main types of ISA – mini or maxi.
At present the rules are complicated but briefly allow up to £7,200 to be invested tax-free.
Mini-ISAs let you spread your £7,200 tax-free allowance over a mixture of investment vehicles; cash and stocks and shares.
Alternatively, if you prefer, you can invest the entire £7,200 in a Maxi-ISA where the provider will invest the funds in the stock market for you.
From 6 October 2009 the ISA limit for people aged 50 or over will be raised to £10,200.
Investments with tax advantages – Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs) and Enterprise Investment Schemes (EISs)
Launched in the mid-90’s, VCTs and EISs are government initiatives designed to generate funding for small to medium sized companies (SMEs) who would otherwise find it difficult to secure investment for their organisations. They work by offering tax reliefs to the investor in return for their speculative investment in companies that might normally be considered as higher risk.
VCT’s are run a little like collective investments - by a fund manager - who will spread the collective investments of a number of individuals across a group of SMEs. Alternatively, investment in an EIS would constitute a direct investment into a single company as opposed to a group.
Companies must comply with rigorous criteria to qualify for funding in this way and both schemes significantly benefit the economy as a whole – an injection of capital into new, innovative organizations fosters the entrepenuerial British spirit that drives growth in our nation.
There are many other investment vehicles and we are experienced in advising on all of them. Please contact us if you are interested in:
